When Virtual Therapy Can Be a Better Fit Than In-Person
If you have been reading along, you already know we start with clarity and fit. A complimentary 20-minute consultation, followed by early sessions that help you slow things down and get oriented, at a pace that feels manageable.
Then comes a very practical question, especially for high-achieving adults:
Why online therapy? Does it really work?
This post walks through why virtual psychotherapy can be a strong fit for high achievers, and why it often makes the work more consistent, more private, and more integrated into real life.
High achievers do not need one more errand
For many high-responsibility people, the biggest barrier to therapy is not motivation. It is logistics.
Things like:
- commuting
- parking
- taking time off
- rearranging already packed weeks
- worrying about being seen
Online therapy reduces friction. It makes it easier to show up consistently, which matters when you are building momentum and change over time.
Does online therapy actually work?
For many issues, research supports video-based psychotherapy as an effective format, with outcomes often comparable to in-person care.
The therapeutic relationship also holds online. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found no statistically significant difference in therapeutic alliance between videoconferencing psychotherapy and in-person psychotherapy, based on both patient and therapist ratings.
In Canada, virtual mental health care is not only widely used, it is also well received. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), 82% of Canadians who received virtual mental health care reported being very or somewhat satisfied.

Why online therapy can be ideal for high achievers
1) Privacy, especially if you are public-facing
If you are a lawyer, physician, founder, executive, leader, or community-facing professional, privacy matters.
Virtual therapy can reduce the chance of running into colleagues or clients, and it can make it easier to seek support earlier, before things reach a breaking point.
2) Time efficiency, without losing depth
No commute. No waiting room. No transition stress.
For many clients, this makes therapy feel more doable in a full week. It also means you can protect the time you set aside for therapy, rather than losing it to logistics.
3) Nervous system comfort
Many people regulate better in their own space. That matters in trauma-informed work.
This can make it easier to:
- settle into the session
- access emotion safely
- come down from pressure without performing composure
4) Real-life integration
Virtual therapy happens in the same environment where life happens.
You are practicing tools in your actual context:
- your office
- your kitchen
- your relationship space
- the place where stress, responsibility, and patterns show up
For high achievers, this can make therapy feel more immediately relevant, and more transferable into day-to-day life.
What you need for online therapy to work well
Clients need only a few basics:
- a private space
- a stable internet connection
- a device with video and audio
- headphones, if that helps privacy
If privacy at home is hard, we can often problem-solve creatively, for example using a car, closing a door, using a white noise machine, or finding a consistent time when you are alone.
When online therapy may not be the best fit
Online therapy is not ideal for every situation.
Virtual mental health care may not be appropriate for severe and/or acute conditions.
If you are in immediate danger or need urgent medical help, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
If you are thinking about suicide or worried about someone else, you can call or text 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline (call or text 9-8-8, available 24/7/365).
