From Intake to Treatment Plan: Your First Sessions With Us

If you have read our earlier posts, you know we work with people who carry a lot. High-achieving adults, professionals, parents, and couples who are often polished on the outside, and privately feeling the strain.

If you have already taken the first step by booking a complimentary 20-minute consultation, the next question is usually:

What happens in the first session?

This post walks you through what your first therapy session at Eden Wellness tends to look like. It has a clear structure, but it is not rigid. It is paced with care and shaped around your needs. It is also designed to give you a clear sense of what we will focus on, and how we begin building a plan.

The first session is not about getting it right. It is about settling in.

If you are a high achiever, you may be used to walking into rooms where you are expected to be:

  • competent
  • composed
  • fine

Your first therapy session is different.

At Eden Wellness, the first session is an intake experience. It is a gentle, guided process where you are invited to share a window into your inner world and your outer world, without having to edit yourself to sound more put together.

What we do in the first session, and why

1) We slow the pace down

High-performing lives often run fast. Therapy begins by creating a different tempo, one where your system can exhale.

This matters because the pace you live at is often part of what brings you in.

2) We invite your story, without forcing every detail

You will be invited to share what matters most, such as:

  • what is happening now
  • what has been building over time
  • what you are carrying that others do not see

You will not be pushed to disclose anything you are not ready to share. We work at a pace that is respectful and safe.

3) We take a thoughtful history

Depending on your needs, we may explore:

  • family of origin and attachment patterns
  • key relationships and relational stressors
  • major life experiences and turning points
  • mental health and physical health context
  • coping strategies, including the high-functioning ones
  • current supports, pressures, and demands

This helps us understand you, not just symptoms.

Collaborative goals: a benchmark, not a contract

In the first session, or early sessions, we collaborate on goals to create a benchmark we can return to as therapy progresses.

Goals are not rigid. They can evolve. But having a shared direction helps the work feel grounded and intentional.

Examples of goals many high-achieving clients name include:

  • “I want to stop living in constant urgency.”
  • “I want to feel calmer in my body.”
  • “I want to communicate without shutting down or exploding.”
  • “I want my success to stop costing me my health.”

Treatment planning: what happens after the first session

After the intake foundation is set, your clinician will begin mapping a treatment plan, which may include:

  • the themes we are tracking
  • the modalities we may draw from
  • how we will measure progress over time
  • what you can expect between sessions

Because some stories are complex, and some nervous systems need more time, the intake process can take one to three sessions, depending on context and depth.

What happens after intake: cadence, rhythm, and starting the work

Once the intake phase is complete, we begin the ongoing work together.

We meet at a cadence that matches your needs and your life. For some people that is weekly. For others it is biweekly. It depends on the season you are in, your goals, and what feels sustainable.

Therapy at Eden Wellness is integrative and tailored. Some sessions are more talk-based. Others are more experiential. Many clients also appreciate leaving with takeaways, tools, or small practices to try between sessions.

How to prepare for your first therapy session

You do not need a script. You do not need to have everything figured out.

If it helps, consider:

  • What feels hardest right now?
  • What are you tired of carrying alone?
  • What would “better” actually look like in your real life?

That is enough to begin.

FAQs

Is the first session just paperwork?

No. We do gather essential context, but the session is meaningful clinical work. The goal is to understand you and begin shaping a direction.

What if I cry or shut down?

Both are normal. We pace the work with care. You do not need to hold it together in therapy.

How many sessions until I feel better?

It depends on your goals, your history, and your cadence. We will talk about this openly as we shape your treatment plan.
